This Sunday I'll be preaching on Luke 3:7-18 . O nce again, we encounter John the Baptist in Sunday's gospel, Luke 3:7-18. I have a couple of questions of this text. First, how do we get from John calling his audience a brood of vipers to " So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people" (v. 18). Huh? Where do you see the good news in this passage? John is certainly an interesting character and example for us all to point to Christ and not ourselves. What do you all think? picture

Did Jesus Get Up On The Wrong Side Of The Bed?

This is the sermon I will be preaching tomorrow at St.Timothy Lutheran Church's Drive-In Service. If you're in the Bemus Point/Jamestown, NY area, join us a 10 for a 30-minute service in our parking lot. You can worship from the comfort and safety of your car. There are some oddities in today’s gospel story. A foreign woman approaches Jesus and the disciples. The disciples seem to rebuff her while Jesus ignores her and then insults her. Is this the Jesus we expect? No! But we need to remember that Jesus is also human and fully so. Who is this woman approaching Jesus and the disciples? She’s a Canaanite, meaning she’s a gentile and she is nameless. A gentile and a woman--that’s two strikes against her! However, there are three Canaanite women in Jesus’ lineage: Rahab, Tamar, and Ruth (Matthew 1:3,5). Her people’s blood runs through Jesus’ veins and Jesus’ people’s blood runs through hers. As the woman approaches, she starts shouting! The Greek

Here are some thoughts on Sunday's gospel reading. What do you think when you read it? This was shared with the people of St. Timothy Lutheran Church. Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28 21 Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon.” 23 But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, “Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us.” 24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26 He answered, “It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” 27 She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed insta

Bad News Leads to Good News

This is the sermon I preached at St. Timothy Lutheran Church on Sunday, Jan. 26. The text is Matthew 4:12-23.   Today’s gospel starts out with bad news. Jesus’ cousin, John the Baptist, has been arrested. Hearing this, Jesus “withdrew to Galilee” (v. 12). This opening verse is not simply a way to mark time, but it signals that John’s arrest is a dangerous situation for Jesus, and he must choose how to respond. For now, Jesus pulls away to carry out his ministry of proclamation in and around Galilee (Audrey West, workingpreacher.org). Throughout Matthew, we see this or similar statements, “…so that what had been spoken through the prophet…might be fulfilled” (v. 14). Normally these words refer to a time when such and such will happen. However, rather than the time being fulfilled in today’s gospel, the place is being fulfilled—Galilee of the Gentiles. God means to embrace everyone, Jew or Gentile. How shocking! God did what God said he would do. God’s Messiah had been promised a

This is the reflection that was sent out to the people of God at St. Timothy Lutheran Church. This is the text I'll be preaching on Sunday.  First Reading: Ezekiel 17:22-24                                                  22 Thus says the Lord God:  I myself will take a sprig   from the lofty top of a cedar;   I will set it out.  I will break off a tender one   from the topmost of its young twigs;  I myself will plant it   on a high and lofty mountain.   23 On the mountain height of Israel   I will plant it,  in order that it may produce boughs and bear fruit,   and become a noble cedar.  Under it every kind of bird will live;   in the shade of its branches will nest   winged creatures of every kind.   24 All the trees of the field shall know   that I am the Lord.  I bring low the high tree,   I make high the low tree;  I dry up the green tree   and make the dry tree flourish.  I the Lord have spoken;   I will accomplish it. Isn’t this a beautiful, encouraging, poetic pi

All I Really Need to Know...

This past Sunday, as well as it being the Third Sunday of Easter, we celebrated Earth Day Sunday. At St. Timothy's , one of our lay people with a passion for stewardship of the earth, brought the message for the day. At St. Mark's , I preached. Below is what I shared with God's people at St. Mark's . The gospel was Luke 24:36b-48 . Have any of you ever read the book, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten by Robert Fulghum? Granted, the title is a bit of an exaggeration, however it goes right to the core ways of how to behave with others in our world. 1. Share with others if you can. 2. Refrain from hitting. 3. Clean up after yourself. 4. Apologize when you hurt someone and so on. If you do these things you'll be well on your way to becoming a good citizen. What would you say if I told you that everything we need to know about Jesus Christ is found in this passage of Luke's gospel? In these verses, we find a concise summary of Je

Praise You in this Storm

When I hear this, I think of all those who have suffered so much from weather driven disasters, both overseas and in our own country. And then along with that, we have the gospel text for tomorrow: 15 "If you love me, you will keep my commandments.   16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you anothe r Advocate, to be with you forever.   17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.   18 "I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you.   19 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live.   20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.   21 They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them."   (John 14:15-21 NRS) God forg
